Remarks By Afghanistan's Foreign Affairs Minister Salahuddin Rabbani At The Joint Press Conference With China Foreign Minister Wang Yi
Beijing, China, January 27, 2016
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
Excellency Foreign Minister Wang Yi,
Distinguished Members of Media,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you very much Foreign Minister Wang Yi, for the very warm welcome and hospitality. I am delighted to be here today in the wonderful city of Beijing. I wish to convey the deep gratitude and appreciation of the Afghan people and the government for vital role played and contribution rendered by the people’s Republic of China in support of security, development and reconstruction efforts over the past many years.
This support has been critical in helping us to improve the overall conditions for our people, and to put us on the path of achieving a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and China are two countries that have enjoyed historical and civilizational ties of friendship, based on mutual respect for each other's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Our relations have evolved into a strategic partnership that seeks to achieve the full potential of our bilateral cooperation, which now ranges from political and economic fields to the cultural and security spheres.
This visit is a continuation of our high-level regular engagements between our two countries, more so it’s a clear manifestation of our two countries abiding commitments to further deepen the scope of our relations to realize our shared goals and serve our mutual benefits.
Last year, we jointly celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries as the year of friendship and cooperation between Afghanistan and China.
I am pleased that this visit has provided an opportunity for us to discuss widely our expanding bilateral ties, and to agree that we will continue to capitalize on the mutual friendship and goodwill that exists between our two nations for the realization of our shared interests.
In my meetings with His Excellency Foreign Minister Wang Yi, we held extensive and fruitful discussions on all dimensions of our partnership and bilateral cooperation especially in regards to China’s continued and constructive role in an Afghan led and Afghan owned peace and reconciliation process. In this regard, we thank China’s role in the Quadrilateral Coordination Group.
We also discussed China’s support for Afghanistan’s full membership in the Shangai Cooperation Organization, and I very much welcome and appreciate China’s positive response to Afghanistan’s bid to come a full member of this important organization.
Economic cooperation was another important part of our discussions today. In this regard, we focused on Afghanistan’s membership in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and discussed Afghanistan’s strategic position in becoming a transit route in the Silk Road Project. We believe that the five nations railroad from China to Iran through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan can play a vital role in strengthening regional connectivity.
We also discussed the implementation of additional projects, which China has pledged to build in Afghanistan. These include the construction of low cost houses and Kabul exhibition center.
As another issue of importance, I reassured Minister Wang Yi that Afghanistan stands in full support of “a One China Policy”, consistent with our long standing position on the issue.
I wish to conclude by extending the deep appreciation of the Afghan Government and people to Government and people of China for standing with us during our difficult times. And as we move ahead, we look forward to China’s continued support and commitment in helping us to realize a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.
I thank you.
