“October 11, 2013 marks the second International Day of the Girl Child which raises awareness of the lives of girls and young women as citizens and as powerful voices of change in their families, their communities and their nations. I am proud that Canada has led the international community in adopting this significant day. Equal opportunity for girls is good for all of us. The meaningful participation of girls in society ensures a stronger community for the future and breaks the cycle of poverty, violence and discrimination that girls around the world continue to face everyday. This year’s theme on innovation for girls’ education reminds us of both the progress that has been made in improving access to girls’ education and the need for continued leadership to ensure that this basic human right is met. Quality education empowers and also opens the door for more prosperous and peaceful families and communities.”

The other lives in Kelowna, Canada. Journalist and author Sally Armstrong accompanies 15-year-old Alaina Podmorow on her first trip to Afghanistan and introduces her to Noorjahan Akbar and Anita Haidary. This is the story of the amazing encounter of three women. They also meet Mumtaz Bibi and Sahar Gul, teenaged victims of violent harassment.
