Speaker of the Senate of Afghanistan visits Canada

Ottawa April 22, 2015: His Excellency Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, Speaker of the Senate(Meshrano Jirga) of Afghanistan and a delegation of Senators and officials visited Canada by the Invitation of the Speakers of the Senate and House of commons of Canada.
Accompanied by Mr. Mohammad Dawood Qayomi, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy, the delegation met with His Excellency The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons, The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and other officials of the government of Canada.
H.E. Muslimyar attended the standing committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development and the Standing Committee on National Defence of the House of Commons and spoke about the progress and challenges in Afghanistan and the current situation in the region and Canadian involvement in Afghanistan. He also attended the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Senate. While in Ottawa he also visited the Embassy of Afghanistan, and Canadian War Museum.
During his visit in Ottawa H.E. Muslimyar expressed the gratitude of the People and the Government of Afghanistan for Canadian contribution and sacrifices for the past decade. He called Canada a close friend of Afghanistan and mentioned that, Afghanistan today is better than 14 years back, thanks to Canada and the international community and said that “We will never forget your sacrifices”.
During his meeting with the Right honourable Governor General, H.E. Muslimyar thanked Canada for its substantial contributions in the fields of Security, Development, Governance, Rule of Law, Demining and education. Meanwhile the Right Honourable Governor General welcomed H.E. Muslimyar to Canada and said this trip will bring us and our two governments closer. He also praised the recent political transition and the finalization of the Cabinet of the Government of National Unity especially the inclusion of four women as Cabinet Ministers as a progress towards gender equality.
The Right Honourable David Johnston was eager to know about the recent mining law of Afghanistan, which was passed by the Parliament, and asked for more information. H.E. Muslimyar said that this law passed by parliament and signed by president of Afghanistan now pave the road to long term investments in the country and guarantees mining companies and governments to invest in one of the world’s biggest mines and welcomed Canadian companies and asked Canadian government to get involved.
Speaker Muslimyar also met with the Honourable Senator Salma Ataullahjan, the Chair of the Canadian Group of the Inter-parliamentary Union during a lunch at the Parliamentary Dining Room, and discussed Canada’s role in Afghanistan’s economic development in women’s issues.
His Excellency Muslimyar invited the Speakers of the Canadian Parliament to Visit Afghanistan.
The second part of his trip consist of visiting Toronto, where the delegation accompanied by Mr. Dawood Qayomi, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy and Ms. Nazifa Langaryan, Consul General of Afghanistan in toronto and they will meet with Honourable Dave Levac, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario followed by a visit to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, meeting with Members of Provincial Legislature, observation of Question Period, a tour of the legislative building, meeting with afghan Diaspora and Visiting Afghan-Canadian Organizations and Community centres and visit to Niagara Falls.
